Global warming could deprive Korea of apples

Over the past 7 days, the cost of apples in South Korea has increased by 2%. Compared to 2023, the rate has increased by 97%.

Apples rose in price due to extreme weather triggered by climate change. Their production fell by a third over the year. Last spring, frosts prevented the fruit from setting and summer rains caused many trees to collapse. Before harvest, apple trees were attacked by fungus.

As temperatures rise, the orchard area will shrink significantly, experts say. It has already shrunk by 44 per cent over the past 30 years. Daegu and Daegu Provinces, which used to be the leading apple producers, have already shrunk by 44 per cent over the past 30 years. Daegu and Gyeongsang Province are losing ground.
